ADHD & Executive Function — A Resource Guide

Understanding ADHD across the lifespan, including its often-overlooked impact on women during perimenopause and menopause.

What Is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain regulates attention, impulse control, emotional responses, and executive function. It is one of the most common and most underdiagnosed conditions in adults — and it looks very different from person to person.

ADHD is not a character flaw, a lack of willpower, or the result of poor parenting. It is a neurological difference rooted in how dopamine and norepinephrine function in the brain. People with ADHD are not incapable of focus — in fact, many experience hyperfocus on things that interest them deeply. The challenge is that the brain struggles to regulate attention on demand, particularly for tasks that feel routine, low-stimulation, or without an immediate deadline.

The Three Presentations of ADHD

ADHD presents in three ways, and understanding which applies to you is an important part of getting the right support:

Predominantly Inattentive

Difficulty sustaining attention, frequent mind-wandering, forgetfulness, losing track of tasks, and trouble following through on obligations — even when you genuinely want to. This presentation is often missed, particularly in women, because it doesn’t look like the hyperactive child most people picture when they think of ADHD.

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive

Restlessness, difficulty sitting still, interrupting others, acting before thinking, and an internal sense of urgency or racing thoughts. This is the presentation most commonly recognized and diagnosed — and it is more frequently identified in men and boys.

Combined Presentation

Features of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. This is the most common presentation overall

How ADHD Is Evaluated at Stellar Wellness

ADHD evaluation at Stellar Wellness is thorough and individualized. It includes:

• A comprehensive clinical interview covering symptom history, onset, functional impact, and prior treatment

• Review of how symptoms present across multiple domains — work, relationships, home management, and emotional regulation

• Screening for co-occurring conditions including anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and thyroid dysfunction, which can mimic or worsen ADHD symptoms

• For women in perimenopause or menopause — hormonal assessment to evaluate the contribution of estrogen and testosterone decline to cognitive and executive function symptoms

• Review of prior evaluations, school records, or prior treatment history when available

We do not diagnose based on a single questionnaire. We take time to understand your full picture before making clinical recommendations.

Treatment Options at Stellar Wellness

ADHD management at Stellar Wellness is individualized and may include:

Prescription Medication Management

We prescribe and manage both stimulant medications (amphetamine-based and methylphenidate-based) and non-stimulant alternatives (including atomoxetine, guanfacine, bupropion, and viloxazine) depending on your clinical presentation, medical history, and preferences. Medication titration is a process — we monitor closely, adjust as needed, and take your feedback seriously.

Hormone Optimization for Women

For women in perimenopause or menopause, estrogen optimization through hormone replacement therapy is considered as part of a comprehensive ADHD management plan. Addressing the hormonal component often meaningfully improves cognitive and executive function symptoms independent of ADHD medication.

Lifestyle and Nutritional Support

Sleep quality, nutrition, blood sugar regulation, and physical activity all have direct and significant impacts on dopamine function and executive performance. We incorporate evidence-based lifestyle guidance into every ADHD treatment plan.

Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustment

ADHD management is not a set-it-and-forget-it process. We schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor effectiveness, adjust doses, manage side effects, and reassess as your life circumstances or hormonal status changes.
